About Ryan

Ryan Tuck serves as an Adjunct Instructor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Hussman School of Journalism and Media. He teaches undergraduate and master’s level classes around media law and the business of media. Tuck holds a B.A. in journalism and political science with a focus in Spanish from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a master’s certificate in technology and communication from UNC-Chapel Hill, and a J.D. from the University of Georgia.

In addition to his teaching role, Tuck works as a media consultant and coach, advising organizations on consumer revenue, audience-centric practices, product development, user experience, testing and analytics, performance-driven change, and strategic planning. He has led programming and coached in several programs focused on reader revenue across North America, Europe, Latin America, and Asia-Pacific, as well as sustainability initiatives for BIPOC-focused publishers and audience development in North America, Europe, and New Zealand. Tuck has also designed and led programming for smaller startup organizations on small dollar donor fundraising and for publishers on growing digital advertising and sponsorship revenue. He is an experienced teacher and coach in change management and strategic planning. Over approximately two decades, Tuck has worked at news media companies of various sizes and types in newsroom, product, and user research roles. His positions have included director of product and audience development at EducationNC, product manager for news strategy with McClatchy’s newsrooms, news director at Bloomberg’s legal news-centric affiliate, and user experience research at The New York Times, where he contributed to the launch of the company’s first reader loyalty research community.
