About Ryoichi

Ryoichi Nagatomi is Specially Appointed Professor (Research) at the Head Office of Enterprise Partnerships, Tohoku University. He holds an MD and PhD from Tohoku University Faculty of Medicine, completed in 1984. Nagatomi previously served as Professor of Health and Sports Science at the School of Medicine and held leadership roles including Dean and Vice Dean of the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering at Tohoku University.

His research focuses on exercise immunology, sports science, skeletal muscle regeneration and fibrosis following injury, adaptation to physical training, the effects of physical stress on the immune system, and the preventive benefits of physical activity and exercise. Additional interests include epidemiology of sports injuries, health literacy, proprioception, motor learning, diet and health, and applications of emerging technologies such as AI in these areas. Nagatomi is President of the Japanese Society of Physical Fitness and Sports Medicine (since 2023) and has served in numerous committee and leadership positions, including as a Fellow of the European College of Sports Science, member of its Science Committee, past president of the International Society of Exercise and Immunology, and various roles in Japanese clinical sports medicine and physical fitness societies. He has contributed to population studies on factors influencing muscle health and recovery.
