Dr Sam Teague is a Senior Research Fellow and NHMRC Emerging Leader at James Cook University’s Department of Psychology. She completed her PhD at Monash University’s Centre for Developmental Psychology and Psychiatry in 2019, with a thesis investigating the role of attachment in the behaviour and emotional problems of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Prior to her current role, she held a Dean’s Postdoctoral Fellowship at Deakin University from 2020 to 2021. Dr Teague leads the Digital Mental Health stream within JCU’s Digital Wellbeing Group and maintains an honorary research fellowship at Deakin University’s Lifespan Institute. Her research program focuses on advancing the early detection, screening, and treatment of mental health issues in regional, rural, and remote children and families through digital technologies, encompassing longitudinal and epidemiological studies on the developmental roots of mental and behavioural disorders alongside the development and evaluation of clinical digital interventions such as mobile apps and social media programs for depression and anxiety.
Dr Teague has authored more than 60 articles, reviews, and reports and has secured or co-led grants exceeding $4.4 million, including an NHMRC Investigator Grant and funding under the MRFF Million Minds Mental Health Research scheme. Her contributions have influenced clinical practice guidelines and international policy on child and parent mental health, as well as the responsible integration of artificial intelligence in mental healthcare. She supervises research students in child psychology and digital mental health topics and leads projects including the ‘Nest’ mobile app for perinatal couples and studies on youth alcohol use in the digital age.
