About Sandra

Dr. Sandra Gabriele serves as Vice-President, Academic and Provost at OCAD University, having joined the institution on August 18, 2025, for a five-year term. In this role, she oversees the overall academic enterprise, including direction and support for the Faculties of Art, Design, and Arts and Science, the School of Graduate Studies, the Centre for Learning and Teaching, Library Services, and units in Student Affairs, as well as the University Senate and Institutional Quality Assurance Process. Prior to her appointment at OCAD University, Dr. Gabriele held several leadership positions at Concordia University, including chair of the Communication Studies department and vice-provost, Innovation in Teaching and Learning, a position she assumed in 2017. She earned a reputation there as a collaborative leader who co-constructed the university’s first institution-wide teaching and learning strategy and launched initiatives such as COLE, an online exam platform, and LITL, a lab for innovative experimentation in teaching and learning. She also established FUSION, a pan-Canadian university innovation network, and launched Concordia’s Humanities+ program, while securing more than $4.1 million in funding with additional amounts under consideration.

Dr. Gabriele holds a PhD in Communication Studies from Concordia University, an MA in Women’s Studies from St. Mary’s, Dalhousie, and Mount Saint Vincent Universities, and a BA in English from Wilfrid Laurier University. Her scholarship explores journalism studies, media history, and video games studies. In 2022, with co-author Paul Moore, she published The Sunday Paper: A Media History, the first media history of the Sunday newspaper. She has spearheaded technological advancements in accessible digital learning environments and supported the implementation of curriculum-focused sustainability and decolonization plans.
