Mtshali co-authored the peer-reviewed article 'Establishing career competencies for the fourth industrial revolution: a qualitative study of expert perspectives in South Africa' with Nelesh Dhanpat, published in Frontiers in Psychology in 2026. The study employed a qualitative design involving semi-structured interviews with 14 South African experts and identified six key themes in career competencies: interpersonal skills, mindset, self-direction and agency, change agility, technology and data, and contextual competencies.
