About Sanjay

Sanjay G. Reddy is Professor of Economics at The New School for Social Research and an Affiliated Faculty Member of the Politics Department. He teaches courses including development economics, microeconomics, and philosophy and economics. He holds a PhD in Economics (2000) and an MA in Economics (1995) from Harvard University, an MPhil in Social Anthropology (1993) from the University of Cambridge, and an AB in Applied Mathematics with Physics (1991) from Harvard University. His research focuses on development economics, inequality and poverty, international economics, political economy, and economics and philosophy. He has published widely in academic journals and books, including the co-edited volume “Understanding India’s New Political Economy: A Great Transformation?” (Routledge, 2011) and “International Trade and Labor Standards: A Proposal for Linkage” (Columbia University Press, 2008, with Christian Barry). He was elected a Fellow of the Human Development and Capabilities Association and has served on multiple editorial advisory boards, including as Associate Editor of the Journal of Human Development and Capabilities. Reddy previously served as Chair of the Department of Economics at The New School (2022–2024) and as a member of the Independent High-level Team of Advisers to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. He is a co-founder and team leader of the Global Consumption and Income Project and has held fellowships at institutions including Harvard University, Princeton University, and the City University of New York. His work has influenced discussions on global poverty measurement, trade and labor standards, and the political economy of development, with contributions to reports such as those for the BRICS New Development Bank and the International Panel on Social Progress.

Reddy has received research grants from various sources and has been quoted or published in outlets including Foreign Policy, the Financial Times, the Guardian, and Project Syndicate. He has delivered prominent academic lectures and participated in high-level UN panels. His professional contributions extend to advisory roles with the UN Development Programme’s Human Development Report, the UN Statistics Division, and the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food.
