Sarah Beaven is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Earth and Environment at the University of Canterbury, a position she has held since May 2017. She earned a PhD in Hazards and Disasters from the University of Canterbury, with her 2015 thesis examining the management of the science/policy boundary after a disaster. She also holds a PhD in Literature with Cultural Studies from the University of Melbourne.
Beaven's research focuses on disaster risk and resilience, adaptive governance, and cross-sector collaboration. Her work includes analysis of collaborative governance following New Zealand disasters, such as the Residential Advisory Service after the Canterbury earthquakes, and research coordination before, during, and after the 2011-2012 Canterbury Earthquake Sequence. She contributes to the university's Disaster Risk and Resilience group and has publications addressing knowledge sharing in interdisciplinary disaster risk management initiatives. Beaven is cited extensively in her field, with over 650 citations recorded on academic databases.
