Dr Sarah MacQuarrie is Senior Lecturer in Psychology of Education at the Manchester Institute of Education, University of Manchester. She holds an MA (Hons) in Psychology from the University of Glasgow, an MSc in Research Methods in Psychology and a PhD in Psychology from the University of Strathclyde. Prior to her current role, she held positions at the University of Strathclyde, the University of the Highlands and Islands and Robert Gordon University. Her research focuses on the application of psychological research to educational practice, with particular emphasis on knowledge equity and inclusive education. Key areas include teacher engagement with research, bilingual and minority language education such as Gaelic-medium education, group work in classrooms, outdoor learning, nature-based education and the role of physical activity and wellbeing in schools. She has contributed to projects examining barriers to literacy resources, language assessment in immersion settings and student involvement in research processes. MacQuarrie has served as Programme Director of the MEd in Psychology of Education (2019–2023), during which the programme received re-accreditation from the British Psychological Society with commendations. She is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society and a Chartered Psychologist, as well as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her service includes editorial board memberships for journals such as the British Educational Research Journal, Education 3-13, the Journal of Adventure Education & Outdoor Learning and the Journal of Research in Special Educational Needs, along with roles chairing admissions and malpractice panels at the University of Manchester.
