Professor Sehaam Khan is Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic at the University of Johannesburg. She completed a PhD degree in Microbiology (Molecular Virology) in 2002 at the University of the Western Cape, with one year of research conducted at Wageningen University in the Netherlands. She began her academic career as a lecturer in 2002 at the then Cape Technikon, now Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), advancing to Associate Professor by 2008. From February 2005 to February 2006, she served as a post-doctoral fellow at the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology in Singapore, focusing on genes in the coronavirus (SARS Co-V).
Professor Khan held the position of Acting Head of Department for Biomedical Technology at CPUT from June 2014 to June 2015 and served as Dean of the Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences at the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) starting in 2016. She was Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Johannesburg from 2019 to 2022 before assuming her current role. Her contributions include peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, scientific papers, conference proceedings, and the supervision of numerous master’s and doctoral students. She has been a member of societies in microbiology and virology, serving as external moderator for Virology for the Biomedical Technology Board until 2022, a member of the Research and Innovation Committee for Namibia’s Fifth National Development Plan, and a member of the Premier of Gauteng’s Advisory Committee for COVID-19.
