Professor Seiichi Taguchi serves as Professor (Special Appointment) and Principal Investigator at the Institute for Aqua Regeneration, Shinshu University. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo in 1989. His career includes positions as assistant professor at Tokyo University of Science, research scientist at the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology of Immune System at Louis Pasteur University in France, senior research scientist at the Polymer Chemistry Laboratory of RIKEN, and Professor at the Graduate School of Engineering, Hokkaido University, beginning in 2004. He later held appointments at Kobe University before joining Shinshu University in 2025.
Taguchi’s research centers on synthetic biology approaches to develop novel biological catalysts for the production of biodegradable bioplastics, such as lactate-based polyesters (LAHB), and biologically active molecules. His work addresses environmental challenges, including the biodegradation of these materials in marine and deep-sea conditions and high-yield production methods. In 2025, he received the Japan Society for Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Agrochemistry (JSBBA) Award for his contributions. Key recent publications include studies on the deep-sea biodegradation of LAHB published in 2025 and reinforced enzyme expression for enhanced LAHB production. His efforts advance sustainable materials for water-related and industrial applications.
