Associate Professor Shahieda Adams is an Occupational Medicine specialist at the University of Cape Town. She holds joint appointments as Senior Lecturer in the Occupational Medicine Division of the School of Public Health and Family Medicine and as Occupational Medicine Consultant in the Department of Medicine. She heads the Occupational Medicine clinic at Groote Schuur Hospital, where she provides clinical training to registrars in the occupational medicine specialist training programme. Adams also convenes the Postgraduate Diploma in Occupational Health and supervises postgraduate students at master’s and doctoral levels in the Occupational Medicine Division.
Her academic qualifications include an MBChB from the University of Cape Town awarded in 1990, an MFamMed from Stellenbosch University, a Diploma in Occupational Health, an MMed in Occupational Medicine, Fellowship of the College of Public Health Medicine in Occupational Medicine, and a PhD in Public Health from the University of Cape Town. She was the first occupational medicine specialist trained in South Africa and the first recipient of the SASOM Medal of Excellence. Adams is a recipient of the Discovery Academic Fellowship and a Fogarty International Clinical Research Fellow. Her research focuses on the occupational health of health workers, occupational lung disease associated with mining exposures, and occupational health systems research aimed at improving services and compensation for affected workers. She contributes to occupational health policy formulation, occupational health and safety law, and workers’ compensation frameworks in South Africa. Adams maintains a joint appointment with the Western Cape Department of Health.
