About Shaojie

Shaojie Gu is an Assistant Professor at the Magnesium Research Center, Kumamoto University, where he has held the position since October 2024, with concurrent appointments at the Institute of Light Metals and the Light Metal Research Hub. He previously served as a Designated Assistant Professor in the Graduate School of Engineering at Nagoya University from April 2022 to September 2024. Gu earned his Doctor of Engineering degree from Nagoya University in March 2022.

His research centers on electrically assisted forming technology for light alloys, with interests including finite element method applications, metal processing, strengthening and toughening mechanisms, Joule heating, electron wind force, microstructural optimization, light alloys, titanium alloys, and materials science. Gu has authored or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed papers as lead or corresponding author, including "Electric current-driven heterogeneous microstructures in dual-phase titanium alloys" in Nature Communications (2026), "Micromachined structures decoupling Joule heating and electron wind force" in Nature Communications (2024), and several articles in Materials Science and Engineering: A and other journals between 2021 and 2026. He serves on editorial boards and as guest editor for journals such as Computers, Materials & Continua and Journal of Manufacturing and Materials Processing, and holds committee roles including Executive Committee Member for the Materials and Mechanics Conference (M&M2025) of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers.
