Sheila Singh is a Professor (Part-Time) in the Department of Surgery and an Associate Member in the Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences at McMaster University. She serves as Director of the Surgeon-Scientist Program, Director of the Pediatric Brain Tumour Study Group, and Director of the Centre for Discovery in Cancer Research (CDCR). She holds a Canada Research Chair in Human Cancer Stem Cell Biology. Dr. Singh received her BSc in Neurobiology and Molecular Genetics from McGill University in 1994, her MD from McMaster University in 1997, and her PhD in Molecular Biology of Brain Tumours from the University of Toronto. She completed her neurosurgery training and received her FRCSC at the University of Toronto. Her research applies a developmental neurobiology approach to the study of brain cancer, with a focus on the identification of cancer stem cells that drive the formation of brain tumours.
Dr. Singh is Chief Pediatric Neurosurgeon at McMaster Children’s Hospital. She has been recognized with awards including one of Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 in 2025 and has received major research grants such as a $1,000,000 Brain Canada award for glioblastoma immunotherapy research. Her work has contributed to advancing understanding of glioblastoma as an ecosystem and identifying potential therapeutic targets.
