About Shirley

Professor Shirley Jansen AM is the Lawrence-Brown Chair of Vascular Surgery in the School of Population Health at Curtin University and serves as Head of the Department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. She holds a PhD awarded in 1999, along with MBChB, FRACS and FRCS qualifications. Her career includes appointments as Clinical Professor at the University of Western Australia, Joint Program Head of Cardiovascular Science and Diabetes, Group Leader of the Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Research Laboratory, and Director of the Heart and Vascular Research Institute at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research.

Professor Jansen’s research focuses on the interface between vascular physics and engineering, including biomimicry for innovative 3D-printed devices and the development of novel therapeutics for atherosclerosis. She has led or participated in over 40 government- and industry-sponsored clinical trials, many as site principal investigator, with several influencing global management of cardiovascular disease. She has supervised 10 PhD and 3 Masters students to completion and currently supervises additional postgraduate researchers. Her publication record exceeds 160 research papers and chapters. She has raised more than $14 million in research funding, including from the Medical Research Future Fund and National Health and Medical Research Council, and has received eight travelling fellowships. Additional honours include the Sustained Overall Clinical Excellence Award from Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in 2016, recognition as a CTEC Diamond Convenor, and appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to vascular surgery as a clinician and researcher. She convenes national and international vascular surgical training workshops and maintains active cross-disciplinary collaborations in imaging, treatment modalities and health outcomes for vascular diseases.
