About Sibongile

Professor Sibongile Muthwa serves as Vice-Chancellor of Nelson Mandela University. She holds a PhD from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London and an MSc in Development Policy and Planning from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Prior to her appointment as Vice-Chancellor, Professor Muthwa was Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Institutional Support at Nelson Mandela University from 2010 to 2017. Earlier in her career, she held the position of Director-General of the Eastern Cape Provincial Government between 2004 and 2010 and served as Director of the Fort Hare Institute of Government upon her return to South Africa. Professor Muthwa is the current Chairperson of Universities South Africa (USAf) and serves on the Presidential Human Resource Development Council. She was a Commissioner of the Financial and Fiscal Commission from 2014 and its Deputy Chairperson from 2017 to 2019. In 2024, she co-edited the book Achieving Nelson Mandela University? with historian Dr Denver Webb. Professor Muthwa is committed to gender justice, social inclusion, and active democratic participation, and she serves on several boards and advisory structures.
