About Simon

Simon Chesterman is David Marshall Professor of Law and Vice Provost (Educational Innovation) at the National University of Singapore, where he is also the founding Dean of NUS College. He previously served as Dean of NUS Law from 2012 to 2022. Chesterman holds a DPhil from the University of Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar, as well as LLB (Hons) and BA (Hons) degrees from the University of Melbourne. His research focuses on international law, public authority, data protection, and the regulation of artificial intelligence. He is the author or editor of more than twenty books, including We, the Robots? Regulating Artificial Intelligence and the Limits of the Law (2021), One Nation Under Surveillance (2011), You, the People: The United Nations, Transitional Administration, and State-Building (2004), and Just War or Just Peace? Humanitarian Intervention and International Law (2001). Chesterman serves as Editor of the Asian Journal of International Law and Senior Director of AI Governance at AI Singapore. He has held roles including member of Singapore's Data Protection Advisory Committee and member of the United Nations University Council. As Dean of NUS Law, he oversaw curriculum reforms, established multiple research centres, and contributed to the faculty's rise in global rankings. He is also a founding editor of the Asian Journal of International Law and has served on editorial boards of several international journals.

Chesterman's career includes prior positions as Global Professor and Director of the New York University School of Law Singapore Programme. He has authored or co-authored reports for the United Nations and other bodies on topics such as the UN Security Council and the rule of law. His contributions extend to public lectures, committee service, and leadership in organizations including the Law Schools Global League.
