About Simon

Simon Klemperer is Professor of Geophysics and, by courtesy, of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Stanford University. He earned a B.A. in Mineralogy and Petrology from Cambridge University in 1980, an M.A. from Cambridge University in 1984, and a Ph.D. in Geophysics from Cornell University in 1985. Prior to joining Stanford, he held positions as Technical Assistant at Rutherford Laboratory, Research Associate and Royal Society University Research Fellow at BIRPS, Cambridge University, and Visiting Scientist at the U.S. Geological Survey. He joined Stanford University as Associate Professor in 1990 and was promoted to Professor of Geophysics in 2005, with a courtesy appointment in Earth and Planetary Sciences.

Klemperer leads the Crustal research group in the Department of Geophysics, studying the structure, tectonics, deformation, growth, and composition of the continental lithosphere primarily through active and passive seismology. His research has emphasized fieldwork in regions including the Tibetan Plateau and Himalaya, the Basin and Range province of western North America, the Ethiopian rift valley, and the Mariana island arc. He has served in numerous administrative and professional roles at Stanford, including Director of Undergraduate Studies in Geophysics and faculty director of the SE3 Summer Undergraduate Research program. Klemperer is a Union Fellow of the American Geophysical Union, a Fellow of the Geological Society of America, and recipient of the Allan V.
