Professor Simon Thrush is a Professor of Marine Science at the University of Auckland. He holds a BSc in Zoology from the University of Otago and a PhD from the University of East Anglia. Thrush has served as Director of the Institute of Marine Science at the University of Auckland and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand. In 2010, he received the New Zealand Marine Sciences Lifetime Achievement Award. His research focuses on marine ecosystems, marine ecology, environmental management, and benthic communities. Thrush has contributed to numerous publications in these areas, including work on species-trait relationships, ecosystem function, and benthic community structures in seagrass meadows and coastal environments.
Thrush maintains an active role in marine science research and teaching at the University of Auckland, with interests in the ecology of coastal ecosystems and their responses to change. He has held positions including at the University of Otago and the University of East Anglia earlier in his career. Thrush is recognized for his contributions to strategic ecological research influencing resource management.
