Síntia Iole Nogueira Belangero is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the Escola Paulista de Medicina of Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP). She graduated in Biomedicine from Universidade Mogi das Cruzes, earned her master’s and doctoral degrees in Human and Medical Genetics from UNIFESP, completed a research stage at the University of Pennsylvania, undertook postdoctoral training in Psychiatry, and received the Livre-Docente title from the Department of Morphology and Genetics at UNIFESP. She coordinates the Laboratório de Neurociências Integrativas (LINC) at UNIFESP and the Genetics and Biorepository area of the Instituto Nacional de Psiquiatria do Desenvolvimento (INPD). Her research focuses on the genomic basis of mental and behavioral disorders, emphasizing genome-wide association studies, polygenic scores, transcriptomics, methylomics, and gene-environment interactions in genetically diverse Brazilian cohorts.
Belangero serves as the Latin American representative in the Schizophrenia Working Group of the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium and as co-leader of the Schizophrenia Group in the Latin American Genomics Consortium. She contributes to human resources training and science communication. In 2024 she received the Pesquisador Destaque award for social impact at the Brazil Conference at Harvard & MIT. Her work appears in high-impact journals including Nature, Cell, Nature Genetics, and American Journal of Human Genetics, and she maintains an active profile on Google Scholar with thousands of citations.
