About Sonu

Dr. Sonu Goel is Professor in the Department of Community Medicine and School of Public Health at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh. He earned his MBBS in 1998 and MD in Community Medicine in 2003 from Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla, and completed a PhD in Health System Research from the University of Maastricht, Netherlands, in 2020. His area of specialization is public health management and tobacco control, with interests including public health, health management, health system strengthening, and tobacco control. He has led numerous extramural and departmental research projects on topics such as tobacco cessation interventions, assessment of tobacco control legislation compliance, hypertension management, and capacity building for national tobacco control programs, funded by organizations including the World Health Organization, ICMR, DST-SERB, and the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease.

Professor Goel has received multiple awards and honors, including the Global Research Network Award from the Society for Nicotine and Tobacco Research in 2025, Fellowship of the National Academy of Medical Sciences in 2023, the Dr. JE Park Oration from the Indian Public Health Association in 2023, and the Dr. Nandagudi Suryanarayana Rao Award from NAMS in 2022. He serves as a reviewer for several journals including the Bulletin of the World Health Organization and the Indian Journal of Community Medicine, and holds memberships and fellowships in bodies such as the Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine and the Indian Public Health Association.
