About Søren

Søren Dinesen Østergaard is a Professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine at Aarhus University, where he also serves as head of the research unit at the Department of Affective Disorders, Aarhus University Hospital - Psychiatry. He holds an MD and a PhD from Aarhus University, completing his doctoral dissertation titled Unipolar Psychotic Depression: Risk Factors, Psychometrics and Bipolar Conversion in 2014. Østergaard heads research efforts focused on improving the treatment of severe mental disorders through the development, validation, and implementation of clinical tools based on psychometrics and artificial intelligence. His areas of expertise include psychiatry, clinical psychometrics, epidemiology, and artificial intelligence.

Østergaard has received several honors, including the Lewis Alan Opler Prize in 2023 for research into the measurement of symptoms of mental illness and the Lundbeck Foundation’s Young Investigator Prize in 2020. He is deputy editor of the journal Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica and serves as an associate editor for Acta Neuropsychiatrica. His work includes publications addressing topics such as artificial intelligence chatbots and mental health, disparities in diabetes treatment for individuals with mental disorders, and the use of machine learning in psychiatric care. Østergaard contributes to editorial roles and assessment committees in his field.
