About Stephanie

Stephanie J. Bryant is a Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder, where she also serves as Director of the Materials Science & Engineering Program and holds the title of Austin Endowed Faculty Fellow. She is additionally affiliated with the BioFrontiers Institute. Bryant earned a B.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1995 and a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder in 2002. She completed postdoctoral research at the University of Washington from 2003 to 2005.

Bryant returned to the University of Colorado Boulder as an Assistant Professor in 2005 and advanced to her current position. Her research focuses on functional tissue engineering, photopolymerization, and biomaterials, with an emphasis on designing 3D synthetic hydrogels to support tissue regeneration, particularly for cartilage. Her work integrates biomolecular and mechanical cues, hydrogel architecture, degradation profiles, and immune response control. Bryant has received numerous honors, including the NSF CAREER Award, the Provost’s Faculty Achievement Award, the New Inventor of the Year Award, and the B&B Daniel I.C. Wang Award. She has secured five U.S. patents and maintains an active research group that collaborates across engineering, materials science, and biology departments. Her contributions have advanced the development of smart biomaterials for clinical applications in tissue repair and regeneration.
