Stephen C. Lougheed is Professor of Biology and Environmental Studies and holds the Baillie Family Chair in Conservation Biology at Queen’s University. He also serves as Director of the Queen’s University Biological Station. His research integrates genomics, spatial ecology, experiments, and modeling to investigate the origins and maintenance of vertebrate biodiversity across landscapes, species ranges, and assemblages, as well as human impacts on species of conservation concern. Fieldwork has taken him across the Americas from Tierra del Fuego to the Arctic, and he leads or co-leads major projects funded by Genome Canada and the New Frontiers in Research Fund focused on northern species management in collaboration with Inuit communities and the development of eDNA and metabarcoding tools for aquatic biodiversity monitoring.
Lougheed has taught more than fifty field courses on four continents and has received multiple teaching awards. He has authored over 130 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters along with governmental reports. In 2017 he received the Science Ambassador Award from Partners in Research. He has held his current appointment at Queen’s University for more than thirty years and continues to contribute to experiential learning and conservation initiatives through his leadership at the Biological Station.
