About Steven

Steven C. Pan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and director of the Learning Sciences Laboratory. He completed his undergraduate studies through the Early Entrance Program at California State University, Los Angeles, earned his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles. Pan joined the NUS Department of Psychology in July 2021. His research focuses on human learning and memory, with an emphasis on evidence-based techniques such as retrieval practice, interleaved practice, and prequestioning or errorful generation to optimize durable retention and understanding in educational contexts.

Pan has received the UCLA Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellowship, an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, an APA Early Graduate Student Researcher Award, and an NIMH T34 Pre-Doctoral Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award. He has been recognized as one of the top 40 most prolific early-career scholars in educational psychology journals (2015–2021) and named an APS Rising Star. His publications include numerous articles in journals such as Educational Psychology Review, Journal of Educational Psychology, Journal of Memory and Language, and Cognitive Research: Principles and Implications, addressing topics including pretesting effects, interleaving in language and category learning, and applications of learning science to instruction. Pan teaches courses including Cognitive Psychology at NUS and has developed resources on effective learning strategies for students.
