About Stuart

Stuart Pimm serves as an Extraordinary Professor in the Conservation Ecology Research Unit within the Department of Zoology and Entomology at the University of Pretoria. He holds the Doris Duke Chair of Conservation Ecology at Duke University, where his primary academic appointment is based. Pimm earned a BSc from the University of Oxford in 1971 and a PhD from New Mexico State University in 1974. His research centers on biodiversity, with a focus on present-day extinctions and strategies for their prevention. He directs the non-profit Saving Nature, which supports conservation efforts in areas of exceptional tropical biodiversity through restoration projects funded by carbon offset donations.

Pimm has authored nearly 400 scientific papers and five books, including the 2001 publication The World According to Pimm: A Scientist Audits the Earth. He received an Honorary Doctor of Science from the University of Pretoria in 2024. His honors include the International Cosmos Prize in 2019, the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement in 2010, and the Dr. A.H. Heineken Prize for Environmental Sciences in 2006. Pimm is recognized as a highly cited environmental scientist whose work addresses conservation challenges across regions including Africa, the Everglades, and tropical forests in South America.
