About Sun

Professor Sun Sun Lim is Vice President, Partnerships & Engagement and Lee Kong Chian Professor of Communication and Technology at Singapore Management University, where she is based in the College of Integrative Studies. She holds a PhD in Media & Communication (2003) and an MSc (Distinction) in Media & Communication (1998) from the London School of Economics, as well as a BSocSci (Honours) from the National University of Singapore (1995). Her research specializations include the social impact of technology, technology domestication by families and young people, AI ethics, the future of work, digital rights, and digital literacy. Prior to her current roles at SMU, she served as Professor of Communication & Technology and Head of Cluster (Dean) of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at the Singapore University of Technology and Design from 2017 to 2022, and as Assistant then Associate Professor in the Department of Communications & New Media at the National University of Singapore from 2003 to 2016, where she was also Assistant Dean for Research from 2014 to 2016.

Professor Lim has authored or co-edited numerous publications, including Digital Parenting Burdens in China: Online Homework, Parent Chats and Punch-in Culture (Emerald, 2024), Transcendent Parenting: Raising Children in the Digital Age (Oxford University Press, 2020), The Oxford Handbook of Mobile Communication and Society (Oxford University Press, 2020), Mobile Communication and the Family: Asian Experiences in Technology Domestication (Springer, 2016), and Asian Perspectives on Digital Culture: Emerging Phenomena, Enduring Concepts (Routledge, 2016). Her articles have appeared in journals such as Nature, Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, and Big Data & Society. She is a Fellow of the International Communication Association and the Singapore Computer Society, serves on fourteen journal editorial boards, and has held public roles including Nominated Member of the 13th Parliament of Singapore (2018–2020), as well as positions on the Media Literacy Council, SkillsFuture Research Advisory Panel, Singapore Environment Council, and Social Science Research Council. She has received honors such as the 2024 Top 50 Asia Women Tech Leaders Award, inclusion in the 2020 Singapore 100 Women in Tech list, and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Copenhagen in 2025. She has won eight awards for teaching excellence and frequently contributes expert commentary to outlets including The Straits Times, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and Bloomberg.
