About Supratim

Supratim Ray is Professor and Chair at the Centre for Neuroscience, Indian Institute of Science. He earned a B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from IIT Kanpur and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, followed by postdoctoral research at Harvard Medical School and HHMI. Ray joined IISc in 2011 as Assistant Professor in Electrical Engineering, advanced to Associate Professor in the Centre for Neuroscience in 2017, and was appointed Professor in 2023. His research examines neural oscillations, particularly gamma rhythms, and their role in high-level cognition including selective attention and meditation, using EEG in humans and microelectrode recordings in non-human primates. He has received the Prof. Priti Shankar Teaching Award from IISc in 2015 and was elected Associate of the Indian Academy of Sciences in 2012. Ray serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Neuroscience Methods and has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles on topics such as stimulus-induced gamma oscillations and their modulation by aging, cognitive impairment, and meditative practices.
