Professor Timothy Craig Hardcastle is an Honorary Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, where he heads the Trauma Fellowship Training Program. He holds the degrees MBChB, MMed (Chir), FCS (SA), with additional registration in Trauma from the HPCSA, and a PhD from the University of KwaZulu-Natal awarded in 2014. Professor Hardcastle serves as Director and Chief Specialist of Trauma and Burns at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, and is a registered Trauma Critical Care Surgeon. His academic and clinical work centers on trauma surgery and systems development in low- and middle-income countries.

Professor Hardcastle is the current President of the Surgical Research Society of South Africa and President of the Federation of South African Surgeons. He previously served as Deputy Director of Trauma and has contributed to numerous publications on topics including vascular injury in trauma patients, renal trauma, ventilator-associated pneumonia in trauma intensive care units, and the management of trauma in resource-limited settings. His research emphasizes trauma epidemiology, critical care, and surgical systems improvement. Professor Hardcastle has been recognized for his leadership in trauma care, including delivering plenary addresses at international summits and advancing trauma training programs in South Africa.
