Associate Professor Foo Tee Tuan serves as Director of the Centre for Chinese Studies at Singapore University of Social Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Mass Communication from Ohio University (2004), an M.A. in Photography and Cinema from Ohio State University (1992), and a B.A. in Mass Communication from Fu Jen Catholic University in Taiwan (1989). His academic career includes appointments at Nanyang Technological University, where he progressed from Lecturer in the School of Communication Studies to Assistant Professor, Deputy Head, and Acting Head in the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information between 1997 and 2010. He joined SIM University (now SUSS) as Senior Lecturer in the School of Arts & Social Sciences in 2010 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2014. He has also served as Co-organizer of the Singapore Chinese Film Festival since 2013 and previously held the role of Deputy Director of the Centre for Chinese Studies.
Professor Foo’s research interests encompass Chinese cinema, television studies, and visual communication. His selected publications include the book Written in the Lion City: Essays on Film, Media and Singapore (1990-2015) published in 2017, the edited volume Half a Century of Singapore: Retrospect and Prospect (2016), the journal article “Reading Hong Kong Comics in the Heartlands of Singapore” (2011), and “Malaysian Drama TV: Producer, Network Executives and the Commissioning Process” (2006). He has contributed book chapters on broadcasting landscapes and film analysis, as well as numerous magazine articles and book reviews. Among his honors are the Teacher of the Year Award from Nanyang Technological University’s School of Communication and Information (2004-2005) and recognition for top faculty and student papers at academic conferences. In addition to his teaching and research roles, he has participated in public events and festivals related to Chinese media and culture in Singapore.
