Temitope Oriola is Professor of Criminology and Sociology in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Alberta and serves as Associate Dean Research in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities. He is an internationally recognized scholar in criminology and terrorism studies, with expertise on policing and use of force, resource-related conflicts, and political kidnappings. Oriola earned his PhD in 2011 and has held previous appointments including Interim Chair of the Department of Sociology at the University of Alberta, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Studies) in the Faculty of Arts, Special Adviser to the Government of Alberta on Police Act Review, President of the Canadian Sociological Association, President of the Canadian Association of African Studies, Joint Editor-in-Chief of African Security, and member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences. His book Criminal Resistance? The Politics of Kidnapping Oil Workers is a notable sociological study of political kidnapping. Research publications appear in journals including Sociology, the British Journal of Criminology, African Affairs, Critical Studies on Terrorism, African Security, Third World Quarterly, Review of African Political Economy, Criminal Justice Ethics, and Studies in Conflict and Terrorism. He is principal investigator on SSHRC-funded projects including a national study of the School Resource Officer program in Canada and research on gender and inchoate suicide missions. Awards include the Governor General of Canada Academic Gold Medal, the J. Gordin Kaplan Award for Excellence in Research, the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal, the Confederation of Alberta Faculty Associations Distinguished Academic Award, the Gerald L. Gall Human Rights Award, the Arts Research Excellence Award, the Rosalind Smith Award, the University of Alberta Alumni Association Honour Award, the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship (twice), and the Kathleen W. Klawe Prize for Excellence in Teaching of Large Classes. Oriola contributes to public scholarship through op-eds, media interviews, and expert commentary.
