About Terri-Ann

Terri-Ann Berry is an Associate Professor in the School of Future Environments at Auckland University of Technology (AUT). She trained as a Chemical Oceanographer before completing an MSc and a PhD in Water and Wastewater Engineering. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), a Chartered Chemist, and a Chartered Environmentalist. Berry serves as Co-Director of the Environmental Innovation Centre and holds an Adjunct Professor position at Southern Cross University in Australia. Her research focuses on practical solutions to environmental issues, particularly pollution and waste management in the construction and demolition sector, as well as risks associated with asbestiform minerals and asbestos. She is co-founder and current Chair of New Zealand’s Mesothelioma Support and Asbestos Awareness Trust. In 2025, she was appointed to the Waste Advisory Board, which provides independent advice to the Minister for the Environment. Berry has led projects examining asbestos in children’s play sand, construction plastic waste in Auckland, and asbestos-containing materials on east Auckland beaches. She previously held positions at Unitec Institute of Technology.
