Thierry Alquier is a full professor in the Department of Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of Université de Montréal. He also holds accredited professor positions in the departments of biochemistry and molecular medicine and of pharmacology and physiology. His research focuses on the neurobiology of obesity, with particular emphasis on the mechanisms by which the central nervous system, especially the hypothalamus, detects nutrient signals such as glucose and fatty acids to regulate energy homeostasis, food intake, and glucose metabolism. Dr. Alquier’s laboratory investigates how alterations in these nutrient-sensing pathways contribute to the development of obesity and type 2 diabetes.
Dr. Alquier earned his PhD in physiopathology from Université Paul Sabatier III in Toulouse, France, in 2002. He completed postdoctoral training in neuroendocrinology and obesity at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center from 2003 to 2006, followed by additional postdoctoral work in endocrinology and type 2 diabetes at the Université de Montréal Centre de recherche du CHUM from 2006 to 2009. He joined the faculty at Université de Montréal in 2009 and is a researcher at the CRCHUM, where he serves as head of the Cardiometabolic axis. He is also affiliated with the Montreal Diabetes Research Center and the CMDO network. Dr. Alquier directs the metabolic phenotyping platform for rodents at the CRCHUM and has supervised multiple doctoral students whose theses address topics in hypothalamic lipid metabolism, energy balance, and related neural mechanisms.
