About Thokozani

Thokozani Kanyerere is an Associate Professor in Environmental and Water Science and Deputy Departmental Chairperson in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of the Western Cape. He also serves as Co-Chair of the UNESCO Chair in Hydrogeology. Kanyerere holds an MSc degree in Environmental Science from the University of Malawi (2001), an MPhil degree in medical/health geography from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (2004), and a PhD in Hydrogeology from the University of the Western Cape (2012). He has more than 20 years of experience in university teaching, research, and the water sector, with a focus on groundwater processes including recharge, flows, and discharge; aquifer characterization; groundwater management; groundwater-surface water interactions; and integrated water resources management. His research interests encompass water quality assessment, contaminant hydrology, remediation technologies, hydrology education, water use and demand management, and research methods for water and environmental studies. Kanyerere has led projects such as the groundwater component of studies on non-perennial rivers to improve understanding of groundwater-surface water interactions and their implications for river dynamics. He contributes to curriculum development, student supervision, manuscript and proposal reviews, and capacity strengthening in groundwater science and management.

Kanyerere teaches and conducts research at the science-practice nexus in groundwater hydrology and integrated water resources management. He is affiliated with the Institute for Water Studies at the University of the Western Cape and has coordinated academic and applied research projects addressing societal challenges in the water-health-education nexus. His professional roles include educator, supervisor, researcher, and reviewer, with involvement in international collaborations and projects focused on sustainable groundwater utilization in Southern Africa.
