About Thomas

Professor Thomas Oxley is a Professorial Fellow in the Department of Medicine at the University of Melbourne, within the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. He holds the degrees of MBBS and BMedSc from Monash University, is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP), and earned a PhD from the University of Melbourne. Oxley is a vascular and interventional neurologist whose primary research interest is neural interfaces. He serves as co-head of the Vascular Bionics Laboratory at the Melbourne Medical School and has appointments at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Oxley is the founder and chief executive officer of Synchron, a company developing implantable brain-computer interface technology, including the Stentrode device. His academic career includes completion of internal medicine and neurology residencies as well as a stroke fellowship in Australia following his PhD in neural engineering. Oxley has received multiple honors, including the Chancellor’s Prize for Excellence in a PhD Thesis and the Dean’s Award for Excellence in a PhD Thesis from the University of Melbourne in 2017, the University of Melbourne Excellence Award for Team-Based Research in 2019, and the UNESCO Netexplo Award for Innovation in 2018. He has authored or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications on topics including motor neuroprostheses and endovascular brain-computer interfaces, with work appearing in journals such as Nature Biotechnology. Oxley’s contributions have advanced the field of minimally invasive neural interfaces, supporting ongoing clinical translation efforts for patients with severe paralysis.
