About Tim

Timothy John Osborn is a Professor of Climate Science in the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia, where he has worked since 1990. He serves as Director of the Climatic Research Unit, a role he assumed in January 2017. Osborn earned a first-class degree in Geophysical Sciences from the University of East Anglia in 1990 and completed his PhD in Environmental Sciences there in 1995, with a thesis titled "Internally-generated variability in some ocean models on decadal to millennial timescales" supervised by Tom Wigley. His career progression at UEA includes positions as Research Associate, Senior Research Associate for ten years, holder of an RCUK Academic Fellowship from 2005 to 2010, and Reader in Climate Science from 2010 to 2014 before his appointment as Professor.

Osborn's research focuses on natural climate variability, including influences from ocean thermohaline circulation, the North Atlantic Oscillation, and natural external factors, as well as climate proxies such as tree-rings, uncertainties in observational records, and the climatology of daily precipitation. He was awarded the Hugh Robert Mill Prize by the Royal Meteorological Society in 2002. Osborn contributed as a Lead Author to the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report and as a Review Editor to the Sixth Assessment Report. He has served on the editorial board of the International Journal of Climatology since 2000.
