About Timothy

Dr Timothy Piatkowski is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Queensland in the Centre for Health Services Research, School of Public Health. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy from Queensland University of Technology. His research focuses on lived-living experience led approaches to substance use, with particular emphasis on image and performance enhancing drugs and harm reduction strategies. He is funded through an NHMRC Investigator Grant to investigate how individual behaviours and systemic factors such as stigma and healthcare barriers influence risk profiles for people who use these substances. His research program has attracted more than $10 million in funding and produced more than 200 outputs.

Dr Piatkowski maintains extensive national and international partnerships, serving as Peer Research Lead and Vice President of the Queensland Injectors Voice for Advocacy and Action, Research Lead for Queensland at The Loop Australia, Queensland Representative for the Australian Injecting and Illicit Drug User League, and in advisory roles for The Enhanced Games. He founded Steroid QNECT, Australia’s only peer-led steroid education and harm reduction program, and led the development of the world’s first steroid checking trial and full program, which received the Harm Reduction Program of the Year award from the Australian Injecting and Illicit Drug User League in 2024. He has received more than 15 prestigious awards, including the Queensland Mental Health Commission Emerging Leader Award in 2026, the AIVL Peer Researcher Recognition Award in 2024, and the APSAD Kyp Kypri Early Career Researcher Award in 2024. Dr Piatkowski is Section Editor for Human Enhancement Drugs at the Harm Reduction Journal and serves on the editorial boards of Performance Enhancement & Health, Drugs: Education, Prevention, and Policy, and Addiction Research & Theory.
