About Torahiko

Professor Torahiko Terada serves as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at The University of Tokyo. He holds a PhD from Université Paris 7 – Denis Diderot. His academic background includes studies in French literature at Sophia University, where he earned his undergraduate degree, followed by graduate work at Kyoto University and further research at Université Paris 7.

Terada’s research focuses on French literary naturalism and image and text studies. He has held positions including associate professor at The University of Tokyo from 2009 to 2015, lecturer roles at universities in France such as Université de Cergy-Pontoise and Université de Toulouse – Le Mirail, and teaching positions at Lycée International de Saint-Germain-en-Laye. He currently directs finance for the Association pour la Promotion de l’Enseignement du Français au Japon and serves in leadership roles with the Japan Comparative Literature Association, including as director and branch manager of the Tokyo branch. Terada has contributed to editorial committees and served as editor-in-chief for the association. He co-authored the book Paravents japonais: Par la brèche des nuages, which received the Prix La Nuit du Livre in the beaux-livres category and the Perle 2022 award in art history. His publications include articles on topics such as Alfred Bruneau, Japanese and Belgian artists, Guy de Maupassant editions, Émile Zola, and image studies in literature and education. Terada has also contributed chapters to exhibition catalogs and handbooks on comparative literature and culture.
