About Toshio

Toshio Hirano is a Japanese immunologist and academic who earned his medical degree from Osaka University in 1972 and his PhD in medical science from the same institution in 1979. He began his career with postdoctoral work at Osaka University and a visiting fellowship at the National Institutes of Health in the United States before returning to Japan for positions at Osaka Prefectural Habikino Hospital and as associate professor at Kumamoto University Medical School. In 1984, he joined Osaka University as associate professor at the Institute for Molecular and Cellular Biology, advancing to professor in 1989. His appointments at Osaka University included professor in the Graduate School of Frontier Biosciences from 2002 and dean of that school from 2004 to 2006, as well as dean of the Graduate School of Medicine from 2008. He served as the 17th president of Osaka University from August 2011 until his retirement in 2015.

Hirano is recognized for his discovery of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and extensive research on its roles in immune responses, inflammation, and disease. Key publications include the 1986 Nature paper on the cloning of human IL-6 and subsequent works on IL-6 signaling pathways involving gp130 and Stat3. His contributions have informed treatments for conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple myeloma. Among his honors are the Crafoord Prize in 2009, the Japan Prize in 2011, the Purple Ribbon Medal in 2006, and multiple other awards including the Sandoz Prize for Immunology. He has held leadership roles such as president of the Japanese Society for Immunology from 2005 to 2006 and served on editorial boards of journals including Cytokine.
