About Toshiro

Toshiro Sato is Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at Keio University School of Medicine and Dean of the Graduate School of Medicine. He received his MD from Keio University School of Medicine in 1997 and his PhD in Medicine from Keio University Graduate School of Medicine in 2004. His research centers on the development of organoid culture protocols for a variety of tissue cells to study tissue cell behavior in biological contexts, with particular applications to cancer research and regenerative medicine. His specialties include gastroenterology, cancer biology, and regenerative medicine.

Sato has held positions including resident and specialized physician in internal medicine and gastroenterology at Keio University Hospital, COE postdoctoral researcher at Keio University School of Medicine, and postdoctoral researcher at the Stowers Institute in the United States. He maintains an active research program supported by competitive funding and has authored or co-authored numerous papers in leading journals, including contributions to Cell, Cell Stem Cell, Gastroenterology, and Nature Microbiology. His work has garnered substantial citations, reflecting significant influence in stem cell and organoid research. Sato also chairs initiatives such as the Keio Organoid Consortium and leads projects focused on organoid design and disease modeling.
