Dr Tshilidzi Van der Lecq is a consultant ophthalmologist in the Division of Ophthalmology, Department of Surgery, at the University of Cape Town. She obtained her MBChB from the University of Cape Town in 2007. She completed her specialist training and Master of Medicine in Ophthalmology at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University in 2015. In 2026 she was awarded a PhD from the University of Cape Town for her thesis on the epidemiology of retinopathy of prematurity in South Africa, becoming the first Black South African ophthalmologist to receive this degree.
Dr Van der Lecq serves as a consultant at Groote Schuur Hospital and holds roles including undergraduate course convener and Faculty Culture Chair in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Cape Town. Her clinical and research interests centre on glaucoma and retinopathy of prematurity. She has contributed to publications on the screening and epidemiology of retinopathy of prematurity in South Africa.
