About Tyrone

Professor Tyrone Brian Pretorius served as the seventh Rector and Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Western Cape from 2015 to 2024. A psychologist by training, he earned his BA, BA Honours and Master of Arts in Psychology degrees from the University of the Western Cape. He holds two doctorates, a DPhil from the University of the Western Cape and a PhD from the University of the Free State. Prior to his appointment as Vice-Chancellor, Professor Pretorius held senior leadership positions including Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic at the University of Pretoria, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Monash South Africa, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic at the University of the Western Cape, where he also served for ten years as Dean of the Faculty of Community and Health Sciences.

Professor Pretorius has published extensively in the fields of career psychology, coping, stress, statistics and research methodology, and has authored or co-authored books, monographs and book chapters. In 2001 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Psychological Society of South Africa for his contributions to the discipline. He is a past fellow of the Yale University Southern Africa Fellowship Programme and participated in the Oxford University Leadership Programme. He has served as Statistical Editor of the South African Journal of Psychology and held memberships in professional bodies including the European Association for Institutional Research and the Psychological Society of South Africa. Post-1994 he contributed to several civil society and policy structures, including the Ministerial Committee on Mental Health and Substance Abuse. Following his retirement as Vice-Chancellor he has remained active in research within Community Health Sciences.
