About Udit

Udit Bhatia is the Pandya-Shivpuri Chair Associate Professor in Civil Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar, with affiliation to the Discipline of Artificial Intelligence and Earth Sciences and joint appointment with the Computer Science and Engineering department. He earned a BTech from the National Institute of Technology Hamirpur in 2012, followed by an MS in 2016 and a PhD in 2018 from Northeastern University. Prior to joining IIT Gandhinagar, Bhatia worked as a Graduate Research Assistant at Northeastern University from 2014 to 2018 and as a Design Engineer at MECON Limited in Ranchi from 2012 to 2014. He was appointed Assistant Professor at IIT Gandhinagar in 2019 and promoted to Associate Professor in April 2025.

Bhatia’s research focuses on critical infrastructure resilience, climate science, statistical downscaling, physics-guided machine learning for urban flooding, the food-water nexus, and the resilience of built and natural systems. His recent publications include a 2025 paper in Nature Cities on partial flood defenses and inequality, a 2025 paper in Water Resources Research on resilient reservoir operations, and a 2024 paper in Communications Earth & Environment on interstate trade and nutrient pollution. He holds a U.S. patent granted in 2019 for a system analyzing geospatial data, human infrastructure, and natural elements. Bhatia has received the College of Engineering Outstanding Graduate Research Award from Northeastern University in 2019, a Dean Fellowship from Northeastern University, and Director Medal and Best Graduating Student awards from NIT Hamirpur in 2012.
