Rate My Professor V Kamakoti

Prof. V. Kamakoti serves as Director of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras and is a faculty member in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. He joined the institute as Assistant Professor in 2001 after working as a Senior Design Engineer at ATI Research Silicon Valley Pvt Ltd. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science and Engineering from Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering, University of Madras (1989), an M.S. by research (1992), and a Ph.D. (1995) from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Madras. He completed postdoctoral work at the Supercomputer Education and Research Centre, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, and the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai (1995–1997).

His research specializations include computer architecture, VLSI design, secure systems engineering, information security, embedded systems, and CAD for VLSI design systems. He co-founded the Reconfigurable Intelligent Systems Engineering (RISE) group at IIT Madras and led the development of India’s first indigenous microprocessor, SHAKTI. He previously served as Associate Dean for Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research (ICSR) at IIT Madras and has held positions including membership in the National Security Advisory Board, Government of India, and chairmanship of a 2017 task force on artificial intelligence appointed by the Union Commerce Ministry. He received the Abdul Kalam Technology Innovation National Fellowship in 2020. Prof. Kamakoti has authored or co-authored over 150 publications in international journals and conferences.
