Valarie Williams is Professor of Dance at The Ohio State University and Director of the Dance Notation Bureau Extension Center. She teaches, stages, and documents movement, with a focus on dance notation and archival practices. Williams holds an MFA and a PhD. Her educational background includes studies at The Juilliard School. She previously served in administrative roles at the university, including as Associate Dean for Arts and Humanities in the College of Arts and Sciences from 2006 to 2018.
Williams has received the Ratner Award for Teaching Diversity in Dance. She co-authored a book chapter with Lecturer Ambre Emory-Maier. In 2018, she published the article “Writing Dance: Notating Choreography.” She has contributed to projects involving global scores and archival materials from University Libraries and has been involved in community collaborations and institutional partnerships, such as with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Williams directs the Dance Notation Bureau Extension Center for Education and Research.
