Vimal Mishra is the Vikram Sarabhai Chair Professor in Civil Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar, jointly with the Earth Sciences department. He received a BTech from C. S. A. University, Kanpur in 2003, an MTech from IIT Kharagpur in 2005, and a PhD from Purdue University in 2010. His prior appointments include Associate Professor at IIT Gandhinagar from 2018 to 2022, Assistant Professor at IIT Gandhinagar from 2012 to 2018, Visiting Assistant Professor at Northeastern University in 2013, Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Washington from 2010 to 2012, and Graduate Research Fellow at Purdue University from 2006 to 2010. He currently serves as Dean of Research and Development at IIT Gandhinagar.
Mishra’s research centers on hydrology, climate variability and change, hydrologic modeling, extreme climatic events, and their implications for global food and water security. He integrates observed and remotely sensed data with large-scale hydrologic models to examine human-climate interactions, including risks from extreme events, effects on energy and infrastructure, and impacts on food and water resources. He is a recipient of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in 2022 in the Earth, Atmosphere, Ocean, and Planetary Sciences category. Mishra is a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India and the American Geophysical Union. He serves as Editor of Earth’s Future and Associate Editor of the Journal of Hydrology. His publications include work on droughts and floods in India, flash droughts, groundwater depletion, and climate projections, appearing in journals such as Nature Climate Change, Nature Geoscience, Environmental Research Letters, and Journal of Hydrology. He has contributed to book chapters on climate change assessment over the Indian region.
