Wajahat Mehal, MD, DPhil, is Professor of Medicine (Digestive Diseases) at Yale School of Medicine. He serves as Director of the Yale Fatty Liver Disease Program, Director of the Yale Metabolic Health and Weight Loss Program, and Vice Chief for Basic Research in Digestive Diseases. His academic background includes an MD and DPhil from the University of Oxford, with residency and fellowship training at Yale New Haven Hospital.
Mehal’s research focuses on sterile inflammation in liver disease, including pathways involving TLR9 and the inflammasome, as well as the effects of adenosine on hepatic stellate cells in fibrosis. Additional interests encompass liver immunology, immune tolerance in the liver, and clinical areas such as hepatitis, fibrosis, inflammation, and weight management programs. He holds appointments in the Center for Weight Management, Fatty Liver Disease Program, Metabolic Health & Weight Loss Program, and related Yale initiatives.
