About Wassim

Wassim Bouachir is a Professor of computer science in the Department of Science and Technology at Université TÉLUQ. He has served in this role since 2016 and holds the Canada Research Chair in Artificial Intelligence for Suicide Prevention. Bouachir is a founding member of the Data Science Laboratory (DOT-Lab) at Université TÉLUQ and a researcher at the Centre for Research and Intervention on Suicide (CRISE). He earned a Ph.D. in computer engineering from Polytechnique Montréal in 2015, a Master’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Moncton specializing in artificial intelligence, a B.Sc. from Université de Tunis - El Manar, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at École de Technologie Supérieure.

His research centers on machine learning and computer vision, with applications in object tracking, activity recognition, signal classification, intelligent video surveillance, medical decision support, and environmental monitoring. As holder of the Canada Research Chair, his work develops AI methods to predict and prevent suicide through analysis of emotional cues, including in voice signals, with recent contributions accepted at the International Conference on Learning Representations (ICLR) in 2026. Bouachir directs programs including the Certificat en informatique appliquée and the Doctorat en informatique cognitive, and teaches courses such as INF 1423 Vision numérique et applications and INF 6426 Vision par ordinateur et apprentissage profond. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications on topics including Parkinson’s disease detection from gait, UAV-based tree detection, and speech emotion recognition for high-risk callers.
