About Wendy

Dame Wendy Hall is Regius Professor of Computer Science, Associate Vice President (International Engagement) and Director of the Web Science Institute at the University of Southampton. She holds a BSc in Mathematics from the University of Southampton awarded in 1974 and a PhD from the same institution awarded in 1977. She later completed an MSc in Computing at City University London. Hall returned to the University of Southampton in 1984 and was appointed the university’s first female professor of engineering in 1994. She served as Head of the School of Electronics and Computer Science from 2002 to 2007 and as Dean of the Faculty of Physical Science and Engineering from 2010 to 2014.

Her research interests include Web Science, AI Policy, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science and the Semantic Web. Hall was appointed Dame Commander of the British Empire in the 2009 UK New Year’s Honours list. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering and the ACM. She co-chaired the UK government’s AI Review published in 2017 and served as a member of the AI Council. Hall is co-Chair of the ACM Publications Board and Editor-in-Chief of Royal Society Open Science. In 2023 she was appointed to the United Nations high-level advisory body on artificial intelligence. She co-authored the book Four Internets with Kieron O’Hara, published by Oxford University Press in 2021. Hall advises governments and companies worldwide on technology and policy matters.
