Rate My Professor Willem Heber van Zyl

Professor Willem Heber van Zyl is Distinguished Professor in Microbiology at Stellenbosch University. He obtained a BSc (cum laude) in 1979, a BScHons (cum laude) in 1980, and an MSc in 1983 from the University of the Orange Free State, followed by a PhD in Molecular Biology from Princeton University in 1989. His research focuses on the microbiology and biochemistry of plant-degrading enzymes, with particular emphasis on the recombinant production of these enzymes in baker’s yeast for biofuel production from total plant biomass and in filamentous fungi such as Aspergillus niger for applications in the food and feed industries. Professor van Zyl leads a well-established laboratory in yeast biotechnology and serves as the NRF Senior Chair of Energy Research in Biofuels and other clean alternative fuels, a position he has held since 2007. In this role, he directs a large research programme on advanced second-generation technologies for converting plant biomass to biofuels and supports human capital development through scientific and engineering training in collaboration with industry and NGOs.

Professor van Zyl has established international collaborations with researchers in Europe and the United States, particularly in biomass conversion to bioethanol, and holds several joint international patents in these fields. His group contributed to yeast technology later acquired by Lallemand Inc. In 2014, he was among the first cohort of professors promoted ad hominem to Distinguished Professor in Microbiology at Stellenbosch University. He has received the Rector’s Award for Excellent Teaching. His work has advanced the field of yeast biotechnology and green chemical bio-platforms, with significant impact on biofuel research and the broader bioeconomy in South Africa and internationally.
