About William

William R. Fitzsimmons serves as Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at Harvard College. He joined Harvard College in 1986. Previously, he was Executive Director of the Harvard College Fund from 1984 to 1986 and Director of Admissions at Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges from 1975 to 1984. In 1972, he began as Assistant and Associate Director of Admissions until 1975.

He holds a bachelor’s degree from Harvard College and master’s and doctoral degrees from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He is a former Trustee of the College Board and a member of the National Association for College Admissions Counseling. He formerly chaired the Commission on the Use of Standardized Tests in Undergraduate Admissions. Fitzsimmons has been involved in various research projects, publications, and professional activities on issues related to admissions and financial aid.
